Church History

Union Church at Lake Martin is located in Union Community along highway 50 in the southeastern part of Tallapoosa County. The earliest written records or documents pertaining to our church comes from a deed for one and a half acres in September 1895. The church is described as being a Methodist Protestant Church and had trustees at that time. Our church was admitted to the Macon Circuit in November 1896 which consisted of four small churches including Union, Antioch, Pentecost and New Prospect.

From 1895 to 1921 Union Protestant Church members built and worshiped in a log cabin behind the present day sanctuary. Methodist archives at Huntingdon College describes a "new church" being completed at Union in 1921, which is our current sanctuary (2022). In 1939 Sardis was added to the Macon Circuit and one pastor served all five churches. In 1963, the Tallapoosa Circuit was formed consisting of Union, New Prospect and Pentecost. Later in 1998, Union left the Tallapoosa Circuit and became a Station Church with its own pastor. In September 2016 members voted to leave the United Methodist Church and in 2022 voted to name our church Union Church at Lake Martin. Since the 1960's, five members have entered the ministry. Throughout our history, many changes have taken place in regards to additions and improvements to our facilities, programs and ministries of the church. Today we are a vibrant, growing and exciting church, biblically based, and continuing to serve our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
